Teaching an Old Dog new Tricks

Filed under: Uncategorized — holisticpetportal @ 8:30 pm

This is an old-age question which tends to baffle many individuals: can an old dog really learn new tricks? The answer is ocertainly in the affirmative. In fact it is actually somewhat easy, as a canine is one of the smarter animals around, and each one must adapt to survive. It all goes back to the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin of England, which says essentially that all creatures have physically and mentally changed their behavior over time so as to survive. So to suggest that an older dog is incapable of learning new behaviors is a patently ludicrous statement.

Teaching an old dog a new trick is indeed doable yet it does take time and commitment. If you have a stubborn canine then you might require the help of an experienced so as to see some results. There are actually hundreds if not thousands of good dog trainers throughout north america yet you need to do your due diligence prior to selecting one. For instance, certain trainers only work with certain breeds of dogs while other trainers may only offer specific types of dog training depending on their specialty. More canine and cat tips can be found over at The pet blog

Finding a good dog trainer to help with your dog’s behavior is essential if you want to have a healthy and happy relationship with your pet.  goes a long way in ensuring this healthy relationship. So even if your canine is beginning to age in year and their behavior is unacceptable, or if you want your dog to learn a couple of new tricks, you should consider the benefits that a professional dog trainer can offer.

Dog Wellness essentials

Filed under: Dog Health — holisticpetportal @ 9:11 pm

Having a healthy dog is important. You want your best friend to be as healthy as possible. It is said they age twice as fast as humans so keeping them in top shape is imperative. It helps immunity and helps the aging process possibly slow down. There are many things to think about when you consider your dog’s health. Many of those things include dog food, vaccinations, exercise, water, love, and more. More related details at  Life’s Abundance healthy dog food
Dog food is one of the most important things to think about if you want a healthy animal. Many of the shelf dog foods have chemicals that are not healthy for an animal. These dog foods are cheaper but they can be harmful to your animal. Consider a food with concentrated amounts of meat as protein as opposed to cheap fillers that are so hard to digest, can cause severe allergies and most importantly do nothing to keep your pet healthy.Exercise is also important for any animal. Your dog should have sufficient amount of room to run around and play. If your dog is kept indoors for most of the day then you should take the time everyday to walk it outside and give it the exercise it needs. Ideally, a dog should have a good sized back yard to be able to run around in. If not consider a dog park. Exercise is important for a dog to keep their circulation healthy and their blood flowing. This allows for a healthy body, strong muscles, and a happier life for your dog. It also may help there mental state just like humans.
Water is important also. A dog can get dehydrated much quicker than a human being. You should always ensure your dog has plenty of water to drink each day and that it is always available to drink. You may even want to consider spring water or filtered water. The chemicals and other things from the faucet may not be so healthy.

Another important aspect to having a healthy pet is love. Dogs need daily interaction. They need plenty of petting, holding, and love. A dog’s primary goal is to please their owner and you need to show your pet that you entirely approve of them and it will be happy. Studies have shown that dog’s with a lack of love or interaction is not as healthy as pets that have a lot of love. You should spend time talking to your dog and playing with your dog. This will ensure you have a very healthy and happy pet that will last a long time.
A great conversation to start with your vet if you haven’t already is: vaccinations. It is becoming increasingly popular that pet parents refuse to vaccinate every year because many feel it is harmful to the pet. As puppies, vaccinations are necessary and can save your canine’s life. As they get older though you may want to ask your vet about titer testing to measure the antibodies in your baby’s system and then you can determine if that vaccination is necessary. Depending on where you live, some vaccinations are necessary and some are not. This is something you can discuss with your veterinarian.

Everyone wants their dog to be healthy to ensure their life and longevity. There are many factors that play a big role in making this happen and as their owner; your dog depends on you to ensure they have a healthy life. You should ensure the food your dog is being fed is healthy, drinking plenty of water, getting plenty of exercise each day, and you are giving it plenty of love and knowing more about vaccinations.

Off Topic: Human Health, goji juice and more

Filed under: General health — holisticpetportal @ 2:15 am

hi everyone, whil I do not normally add very many human type products here once in a while I see one that tickles my fancy. i hope that you like it as well. It discusses the importance of the superfoods for your health:Even though the major ”superfoods: such as like strawberries blue green algae have been in the news lately, there
are many additional superfoods which have a rather slender profile by comparison and yet are themselves very strong from a nutritional standpoint……
One of these items happens to be that humble herb which we know as garlic. This
item  has a lot of vitamin C and it may even be endowed with certain anti-cancer properties (as a side note, that statement
or others in this article have not been evaluated or
approved by the USDA, which is the top authority in this area). Garlic is considered by some to improve the immune
system and it can be a possible way to lower
high blood pressure as well in a holistic fashion.
In my opinion honey also is a
superfood. It is endowed with some anti-viral properties and is
particularly antioxidant rich. Also, certain pro athletes
claim that it helps retain muscle tissue for a strong
body. It is generally very easy to add
more honey to you diet as it is good in coffee, tea,
pancakes, waffles and toast, to
name but a few.
Another wonderful item on the menu is the goji berry, from which
goji juice is produced of course. As it happens, goji
juice seems to be the ideal delivery system so as to get the maximum benefit from
this power packed berry from the himalayan region of Asia, since it is completely active
with essential polysaccharides, which are just
the “master molecules” your system really needs to
replenish each day for superior health. Also,
these are only found in the
goji berry per say, they are not found in any other plant on the
planet. Goji juice may be the best method since higher
concentrations of the vital molecules can be attained
than individual berries, and the latest technology
achieves a flavor which is far superior to eating
individual berries, as they tend to be somewhat
bitter. Furthermore, this technology works
synergistically to further enhance its already amazing
benefits. Grape juice, which is also a superfood, is
usually added to make this juice a bit sweeter. The
new technology focuses primarily on extracting the
juice

Spring is here so watch for your Pet’s health

Filed under: Dog Health — holisticpetportal @ 6:49 am

This article initially appeared in the MArch 2006 issue of the Healthy Pet net Newsletter, writen by brilliant holistic veternarian Dr. Jane Bicks, a best selling author. HPN specializes in premium dog food from Life’s Abundance

Although you probably do keep a watchful eye on your dog or cat when outdoors, many things can happen there to separate you.  If this does take place, the proper identification will help reunite you with your beloved pet.  All in all, pets lacking good identification tags are many times mistaken as strays and they are therefore treated differently, so make certain that your dog or cat has the best kind of ID tags.  Perhaps try a sturdy, but comfortable, breakaway collar with an ID tag with your pet’s name plus your name, address and of course telephone number.

As certain types of collars may fall off and others break away if caught up and tangled on an object, there are other options for you to choose from, which may vary in your own particular locality. So just ask.

Meanwhile, be on the lookout for other types of hazards…….For instance, as the weather begins to heat up on us, the neighborhood appears to wake up to lawn and garden care.  Some types of mainstream commercial fertilizers and of course pesticides may be very toxic indeed to our pets, and there is indeed certain research studies which seem to suggest that the rising rate of certain cancers in canines could actually be linked to pesticides and even herbicides. For that matter be careful about pesticeds in dog food. Try to buy a premium dog food brand instead, if possible. The pet food recall should have made this all too clear. Therefore, to be safe, be certain that you read and follow the directions very carefully, and be especially certain that you keep them far away from the lawn or garden until the area is fully dry.  In some cases, this could mean an entire day.  If your pet is accidentally exposed to any lawn or garden treatment, act quickly.  Wash your pet immediately with liquid dish soap and call your veterinarian.  Want a safer alternative?  Go organic.

Secrets of a Healthy Puppy

Filed under: Dog Health — holisticpetportal @ 11:44 pm

Hello, I am Max, the black

Lab. I am a 5 years old. It appears that my daddy and mommy are off these days with work and things that seem to never get completed.  Initially the whole family was crazy about me. And they used to even take me for walks down the street. By the way, information about premium grade dog food can be found over at healthy weight loss food for dogs  This is high grade, premium dog food from Life’s Abundance and formulated by Dr. Jane Bicks & Healthy Pet Net. Now back to the article at hand….As I grew older and they got a lot busier, all this ended in a hurry. Now they hardly ever have any time to take me for a walk. They fill my plate with fattening treats and stuff from the table that they eat.  I have been putting on weight too.  I used to be able to sit back on my legs. Now I am forced to slouch to the side. My chest hurts now and I have a hard time breathing too. My owners no longer take care of the quality of my food. They just get any dog food and pay no attention to the nutrients. Most of the dog foods are laden with fat and as a result I have developed lots of fatty tissues in my body.  It is harder to walk these days as my legs ache from the extra pounds.  I get out of breathe so easily now.  My chances for disease are now increased as a result of the obesity.  I wanted to help you learn to take care of your pets so that they will remain healthy, agile and have long lives.

Although fat dogs may seem cute, there could be a host of issues going on.  Joint or locomotion difficulties, extra pounds put added stress on joints, bones, ligaments and muscles.  Heart and respiratory disease, heart and lungs have to work harder to provide adequate oxygen and circulation. Also, extra fat in the chest cavity and around the heart muscle can decrease the efficiency of the heart and lungs.  Diabetes, just like people, diabetes is much more common in obese dogs and cats.   Liver disease, obese animals are prone to liver disease. Heat intolerance, excessive fat has insulating properties that makes obese animals uncomfortable and unable to tolerate heat.  Skin problems, overweight animals often have trouble grooming themselves. The rolls of skin built up by fat deposits can often harbor dirt, bacteria and other harmful organisms.  Gastrointestinal disorder, Pancreatitis is seen all too often in obese dogs. This condition is painful and life threatening.

Dog Food Issues

Filed under: Dog Health — holisticpetportal @ 7:30 pm

Here is a wonderful article bt esteemed writer Lori mathews of new jersey that I thought I would share with you guys…..

As a dog-owner, have you ever thought twice about the actual nutritional value of the food and treats you are feeding your dog? If you are concerned about the health of your pet and loyal companion, you should be more aware of what the ingredients are in the dog food and products that you buy. Sadly, the labels of most commercial dog foods don’t tell the whole truth about what they contain and unfortunately some can contain what I like to call useless fillers. Yes, many people feed their dog not so healthy food and they don’t even realize it.

Dog food production has ‘developed’ in the past few decades but the life-span of these beloved animals have gotten shorter in contrast. Additional details may be found over at Premium Dog Food from Life’s Abundance brand The reason: because these ‘developments’ actually benefit commercial dog food manufacturers more than they do the dogs. It means using poor-quality and even toxic ingredients to ensure cheaper costs of production and longer shelf life. It means very poor nutrition for your pet so that these companies can make higher profits.

The truth about most available dog products is that they are made from low-grade grains, unthinkable meat by-products and artificial preservatives that are not fit for humans and pets to eat. For instance, substitution for meat protein and good carbohydrates are often done with poor-quality grain meals using soybean, corn, gluten, and wheat. These ingredients in fact commonly cause allergies in pets. Meanwhile, the meat ingredients typically used can include unwanted body parts of animals like the neck, head, guts, feet, lungs, and bones. Even harder to the stomach is that these can come from animals that are diseased, dying or already dead and decaying. All of these are mercilessly dumped, ground and mixed into a more acceptable form called ‘meal’ and made into dog food.

To add to this already unhealthy mix, chemical ingredients used by dog food manufacturers have been found to cause early dog deaths due to heart disease, kidney failure and certain cancers. So why pay for junk that will eventually kill your dog?

Dogs age much faster than humans and they require the same quality of nutrition as ours. Naturally, like any other kind of animal, a dog needs fresh and healthy food too. The ideal diet for your pet should consist of high-quality protein, carbohydrates, natural fats, fiber, and even antioxidants. Chicken and fish are good sources of protein that you can look for in dog food. Eggs also provide protein, amino acids, biotin, sulfur, as well as vitamins A, B, E, and K.

A new advancement in health food for dogs now includes antioxidants in the ingredients, specifically from whole foods like apples, carrots, celery, spinach, alfalfa leaf, and garlic. Grape seed extract is also being used for its antioxidants that may help slow down your dog’s aging and to keep its immune system strong. This new kind of dog food likewise has beet pulp, which is a source of fiber and the short chain fatty acids needed by good bacteria in the digestive tract.

Pet Charities

Filed under: Dog Health, Cat Health, Other Animals — holisticpetportal @ 5:56 am

During the recent wave of fires that engulfed huge swathes of California’s forests and neighborhoods, thousands of animals were displaced.  One organization took the lead in protecting the surviving animals, including cows, donkeys, horses, sheep, chickens and goats.  They provided veterinary care and food, not only for these animals, but also for the dogs and cats that escaped with their families to temporary shelters.  This same organization provided care for thousands of animals in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

While we have focused on cat and dog rescue groups thus far, we plan to expand our funding to organizations providing care for a wide range of animals as well, including horses, cows, goats, ferrets, monkeys and others.  We’re committed to giving much needed help to the small rescues, as they do so much with so few resources.

And best of all, every time you purchase a HealthyPetNet product, a portion of the profits are contributed to a fund that supports the operations of this organization.  So, thank you so much for your continued business!  Together, we’re making a positive difference in the world, one animal at a time. Mpre information can be found at Healthy Pet Net

Also take a look at the Hobe Sound Animal Protection League

Operating in Florida since 2001, this organization is committed to rescuing feral cats.  These animals exist in the wild with the constant threat of extreme temperatures, environmental toxins, injury by vehicles, diseases and predatory animals.  Volunteers for this group use their homes to foster and domesticate these beautiful wild creatures.  These cats are either adopted by families after being domesticated, or remain at Caring Fields, a wonderful property that features large houses for cats, complete with fish tanks and TV’s!

East Coast woman wants horse as her service animal

Filed under: Horse health, Other Animals — holisticpetportal @ 6:49 pm

According to an AP article by David Gram out of Warren, Vermont,
the housing group that is known as the Central Vermont Community Land Trust is attempting to determine
whether or not it can accommodate a disabled woman’s new companion,
which in this case is the very unorthodox choice of miniature horse named Earl.
The main potential stumbling blocks appear to be his its need for grazing space and the question of whether or not he is actually housebroken.
Patti cooper, the disabled lady in question, suffers fromextreme celiac disease, which destroys the capacity of the small intestine to absorb needed nutrients
for the body.  This can therefore sometimes be the cause of fragile bones, and she has used a wheelchair for about 4 years or so.
The one year old miniature tobiano pinto horse which weighs in at around one hundred lbs pounds is the perfect height for a face-to-face nuzzle with her while in her wheelchair.
This horse is not actually living with her yet, but she visits Earl each day. It is obvious that a strong bond has formed in the several months since she bought him.
But all is not smooth sailing just yet. She recieved a letter recently from the manager of the twenty-four unit complex where she resides conveying concerns about “possible health and safety issues”.
The management in question then stated that it was looking into whether or not a stall that she had custom built for Earl was an alteration and thus a lease violation. This part sounds a little nit-picky to
me, this seems like more of a technicality but ohwell.
In any event, she stated this was “a veiled threat of eviction” on a weblog which she has been posting on concerning this particular issue.
Lately, however, both she and the said Trust were taking a more reasonable tone. “I do not have any problem with the Land Trust,” she was quoted as saying……she went on, “I think they do very good work in the community”.
Regarding the housebreaking concerns, Cooper stated that she had installed rubber-backed carpeting to her place just in case Earl cannot make it outside in time. She also stated that she was in discussions with a neighbor regarding possible grazing space as well.
An advantage of a horse over a dog is that horses have considerably longer life spans. She said that she expects Earl to live at least another fifty-odd years or so. Well,
I for one hope that both parties can reach some sort of compromise here. it sounds like this animal will make her happy so I pray that the organization will be reasonable and attempt some sort of fair compromise here.

House Dust linked to Animal Illness

Filed under: Cat Health — holisticpetportal @ 1:11 am

Hyperthyroidism has become an oft-diagnosed sickness in felines in recent years, unfortunately.  New research studies appear to implicate an environmental source, according to the September 2007 Healthy Pet Net newsletter.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, also known as PBDE’s, are chemicals used only in recent years as a flame retardant. It has have been proven to cause injury to the feline nervous system, while also interfering with the production of various hormones.
Scientists are worried that these chemicals may also lead to similar symptoms in humans as well. More Cat News at The Cat News Blog
Although they have now been eliminated from current production, many products which contain them, such as fabrics, furniture, foams, some plastics and other items, nonetheless still have them, sadly enouph.
The evidence appears to indicate that if your cat or kitten is suffering from hyperthyroidism, it may be because of an object in your huse – one that could be removed, and perhaps decrease the severity of the illness.
